Stony Plain Road Business Association is looking for dynamic, playful and creative stars to join our team for summer 2022.

Special Events Assistant

The Special Events Coordinator creates and executes special events for the Stony Plain Road Business Association, partnering with community leagues, businesses, and social service agencies in our district. The goal of this position is to build capacity and community partnerships via some weekly and special events for June – September. 

Targeting local communities that live within a ten block radius to our shopping district we seek to build/gain a greater sense of community with the diverse residents within five separate surrounding communities. The Assistant will work with our Executive Director and other staff to build engagement with local merchants and services and to support local economies. Tasks include reaching out to businesses to build events around collective community activation and trust. 

This position requires an openness and realistic approach to building community connections with a diverse social-economic community range. Working experience in events coordination and project management are desirable, and excellent communications skills. 

This position is for 12 weeks (32 hours/week) at an hourly rate of $18.00. Applicants will be required to work some weekends and evenings depending upon the scheduling of events and projects. This position will require on-site working and some remote working, and compliance with Alberta Health regulations and COVID-19 protocols.


Marketing Assistant

The Marketing Assistant is responsible for supporting and activating our Business Retention and Recruitment (BRR) strategy campaign for Stony Plain Road & Area. This will include working with the members’ Services Coordinator to activate our summer/fall campaign to recruit new businesses and to support and retain existing businesses. Utilizing a localized campaign targeting vacant storefronts within a four-block radius to our shopping district, we desire to create a greater sense of community engagement with the diverse residents within five separate surrounding communities. 

The Marketing Assistant will work to build engagement with local property managers and owners, and assist with administrative and marketing support to our recruitment campaigns that will target businesses that we desire to complement our business mix within our BIA. The tasks include reaching out to property owners, managers, realtors, and marketing our business improvement area (BIA). Success on this campaign may lead to a part-time position throughout the year. 

We are seeking an individual in post-secondary studies with a marketing, sales, and/or business acumen. The Assistant will utilize developed strategies and campaigns and activate them with shared goals and outcomes for this project. A strong communications skill set is required.

This position offers $18/hour for eight weeks at 32 hours a week.


Shop Local Assistant

The Shop Local Assistant works directly to develop and execute a SHOP LOCAL campaign with the goal of expanding the depth and frequency of local neighbourhoods shopping within our BIA. 

Targeting projects to increase awareness of the variety of shops and services within our communities of Stony Plain Road an a significant alternative to shopping at big box stores and malls, The Assistant will work with our Communications Coordinator to enhance levels of engagement and activation to build an improved system of supporting and engaging the local merchants. The tasks include researching, creating and launching a revised campaign to support our strategic goals. This position will involve social media and digital marketing and a campaign and several contests over the summer months. This is a tremendous opportunity to translate the skills and theories learned at school and being able to active this learning in a real world setting.

Being an exceptional communications person with creativity and humor are definite assets to succeeding in this role.You should be comfortable and adept with social media and digital environments. You should be passionate about innovation and interactions. 

This position is for 13 weeks (32 hours/week) and pays $18/ hr.


About SPR

Stony Plain Road Business Association is a not-for-profit business improvement area in west Edmonton. Our area is a comprised of mature neighbourhoods experiencing revitalization with infrastructure and community engagement. 

Our mission is to support and promote businesses and the business improvement area with programming, communications, and marketing. We support our 500+ members by providing advocacy, education, and development that attracts and supports safer, positive-community level engagement and activation. This coincides with significant new developments including an expansion to moving the area from a older shopping and service area intersected by an arterial road to evolving to a transit-oriented development with a new LRT line servicing the area and new developments. Over the next 10 – 20 years these new developments will result in about 23,000 new residential units being built. With a new brand, a focused strategic approach, and a strong, passionate vision for the area we want to look towards a re-engagement and empowerment.
